I "Diners" sono posti speciali qui in America. Spesso aperti ventiquattr'ore su ventiquattro, servono uova e piatti semplici cucinati con puntiglio, litri di caffè bollente in tazze rosse da asporto, e sorrisi di inservienti pronti a scambiare due battute su salse e pane tostato. E' difficile rendere la sottile eccitazione che si prova a entrarci dentro. L'umanità che passa e s'incrocia tra i tavoli lo fa assomigliare a un fondale abitato da pesci di mille specie diverse. Questo Denny's degli anni '60 vicino all'università dove insegno è il mio preferito. Mi ispira avventura, conforto e felicità.
